Get Ready for Winter

Carry on cycling this winter! Don’t give it up just because it’s getting a bit colder. Cycling in winter still has some great benefits.

Cycling is still fast, fun and you can get some fresh air and fitness during your working day. You can travel when you like, where you like and still pass all those cars during rush hour! Plus, stay in shape and help save some pennies for the all important festive season. Preparation is key to keep you enjoying cycling. So here’s some tips...

Be Bright and Light

When cycling in the dark, make sure you are as bright and visible as possible.

  • You are required by law in the UK to have a white light on the front and a red light on the rear of your bike. Make sure your lights work well and wear reflective gear so that you’re easy to see in the dark.

  • A reflective vest is a cheap and lightweight solution. Reflective bands for ankles and sleeves and a reflective ruck sack cover all work well.

  • Enrol on a cycle training course in your area so that you can learn to ride more confidently in the dark.

Keep Warm

As it’s getting colder, make sure you keep warm on your bike.

  • Gloves, socks, a hat under your helmet or a buff to keep your face warm can be very handy.

  • You’re cycling so you will warm up quickly, so make sure all your clothing is breathable - layering is key.

Wet Weather

Don’t let a little bit of rain put you off! Cycling in the rain is still fun. All you need is the right clothing to keep you dry.

  • Make sure you have a reflective breathable, waterproof and windproof top that can be easily stowed and put on if the weather changes.

  • A rucksack cover is useful to keep your possessions dry and a reflective one can help keep you visible.

  • Get mudguards fitted to your bike to avoid water being sprayed from the road.

  • Roads can be slippery so watch your speed and take care to brake gently.

Icy Weather

Take extra care when it’s icy, remain aware and make sure you adjust your riding accordingly.

Bike Check

Keep your bike in good working order. Park your bike undercover where possible and check it regularly to keep it running smoothly:

  • Check your lights. Do your light batteries need replacing? Are they securely fitted?

  • Check your tyres. Do they need more air? Is the tread ok?

  • Check your brakes. Are they touching the tyres? Are the brake pads ok?

  • Check your gears. Can you change gears smoothly? If not arrange for them to adjusted or repaired by a mechanic.
